About the role - SHES Specialist (Winnemucca, Nevada)

 

We’re excited to announce an opportunity at Orica for a SHES Specialist to join our SHES (Safety, Health, Environment, and Security) team at our Winnemucca, Nevada site.

 

This role supports SHES programs by identifying, assessing, and mitigating workplace hazards; promoting compliance with regulatory and company requirements; and strengthening a proactive safety culture. The SHES Specialist will conduct workplace inspections and risk assessments, support employee training, investigate incidents and near misses, and implement corrective actions to help prevent recurrence.

What you will be doing

 

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment:

 

  • Conduct routine site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate workplace hazards, including chemical exposure, ergonomic risks, and unsafe conditions or equipment.
  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of Orica's Major Hazard Management (MHM) Program to reduce risk and strengthen operational safety.
  • Manage industrial hygiene monitoring programs, including exposure sampling, PPE administration, and assessments of ventilation, noise, heat, and cold stress controls.
  • Coordinate industrial hygiene and medical monitoring programs to support employee health, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation.
  • Maintain and administer the site's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) program, ensuring accurate documentation and employee access to critical safety information.

 

Policy Development and Implementation:

 

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve health and safety programs, procedures, and standards in alignment with Orica requirements and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the development, delivery, and ongoing enhancement of the site safety induction program to ensure employees and contractors are prepared to work safely from day one.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring employees understand, follow, and actively participate in site safety programs and safe work practices.

 

Training and Education:

 

  • Develop and deliver health and safety training programs that enhance employee knowledge, regulatory compliance, and workplace hazard awareness.
  • Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and awareness initiatives to strengthen employee engagement, reinforce safe work practices, and support a proactive safety culture.

 

Incident Investigation and Analysis:

 

  • Conduct thorough investigations of incidents, near misses, and hazardous conditions using root cause analysis methodologies to identify trends, mitigate risks, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage incident reporting and safety performance data within the Orica Enablon platform, ensuring timely documentation, data integrity, trend analysis, and follow-through on corrective actions.

 

Compliance and Enforcement:

 

  • Monitor and evaluate site activities to ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental, and other applicable regulatory requirements, as well as Orica SHES standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety performance by identifying compliance gaps, recommending corrective actions, and reinforcing adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

 

Communication and Collaboration:

 

  • Build strong working relationships across all levels of the organization to promote open communication, employee engagement, and a proactive safety culture.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify safety concerns, implement corrective actions, and support continuous improvement initiatives throughout the site.

 

Data Collection and Analysis:

 

  • Monitor and evaluate safety performance indicators, incident trends, audit findings, and leading metrics to identify opportunities for risk reduction and operational improvement.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and data visualizations that communicate safety performance, regulatory compliance, and improvement initiatives to key stakeholders.

What you will bring

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, EHS, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related discipline preferred
  • Three (3) or more years of safety, health, environmental, or related experience preferred.
  • Professional safety certification or ability to obtain relevant certifications
  • Experience supporting safety programs within a manufacturing, chemical, mining, industrial, or similar operational environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of hazard identification, incident investigation, risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and safety management systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and proficiency in safety management software.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Incident reporting (incl report writing) and investigation (Basic, 5Y, ICAM, etc.).
  • Ability to build relationships, engage and influence a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations – including OSHA, PSM, DOT, NFPA, ANSI, EPA, ICMI.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI).
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.

  • Occasional night, weekend, and after-hours support as needed to meet operational requirements and support incident response activities 

Physical requirements

 

  • Comfortable working in office, manufacturing, warehouse, and outdoor environments.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stair climbing, and travel across uneven surfaces.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and other environmental elements.
  • Use required PPE, including respiratory protection, with participation in applicable medical surveillance programs.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks associated with inspections, emergency response activities, and site support as needed.
  • Safely work around operating industrial equipment and within active chemical manufacturing areas.
