About the role

We are excited to announce an opportunity at Orica for a Process Engineer within the Orica Speciality Mining Chemicals team. 

 

The Process Engineer is responsible for technical support and continuous improvement for their Process Units (Sodium Cyanide Solution or Sodium Cyanide Solids plants). Area Process Engineers are responsible for all areas of Process Engineering for their responsible Process Units. Process Engineer will provide support to the Technical Manager and be responsible to deliver certain subsections of his/her associated responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to become a Subject Matter Expert for their Production Units.  

What you will be doing

  • Ensure that Process Safety, Environmental, and relevant SHES procedures are adhered to within his/her work environment.
  • Be the custodian of critical elements of Process Safety Management.
  • Provide Process Engineering support for Process Hazard Analyses, Layer of Protection Analysis, and other hazard reviews.
  • Provide technical support to the Operations team for day-to-day and long-term troubleshooting.
  • Provide technical support to improve OEE (Overall equipment effectiveness) (run-rate).
  • Provide technical support for debottleneck studies.
  • Provide technical support & ownership for capital projects and small projects.
  • Provide technical support for the maintenance/reliability, SHES, analytics, supply chain and procurement activities of the assigned production area(s).
  • Own alarm management, SIF management, and PSV management and revalidation.
  • Complete subject matter expert reviews of Management of Change proposals for their production area(s). Will also be the owner of many MOCs.   
  • Support development and delivery of the continuous improvement pipeline for the assigned production area(s).
  • Develop and maintain the process model(s) for the production area(s). 
  • Examine the process data for longer term trends and improvement opportunities and implement as required/justified. 
  • Technical oversight and input to raw materials and production aids (eg. Catalysts, additives, etc) program for the production area(s). 
  • Benchmark performance of the production area(s) and establish key parameters including usages and variable costs. Define and maintain the key reference rates. 
  • Lead/facilitate RCA for process incidents within the area(s). 
  • Provide technical representation for broad site issues/opportunities that involve the production area(s). 
  • Collaborate with the global technical team and asset management team as required. 
  • Join the Global Process Engineer CoP (Community of Practice) with the purpose of collaborating on best practice, method standardization and improvement relevant to the position and requirements. 
  • Develop and maintain Process Safety Information such as safe operating window, PFDs, P&IDs, ELDs and Basis of Safety documents. 

  

The Process Engineer will represent specific technology on the site and support a culture of continuous improvement in that production area. 

  

Connection with the bigger picture: 

Moving to Value Streams and a culture of ownership, continuous improvement and responsibility for stable plant operation within operating window target, having ownership of the above activities will enable to correct outcomes in performance across SQDCM for the site. 

The Process Engineer will report directly to the Technical Manager.  
 

What you will bring

  • Chemical Engineering degree.  
  • At least 5-years of relevant experience in Chemical, Petrochemical or Oil & Gas sites. At least 5 years of experience working with Operations. 
  • Experienced in HAZOP, LOPA and MOC.
  • Process Safety Management experience is an asset. 
  • Knowledge of Safety Instrumented System is an asset. 
  • Provide informal leadership. 
  • A strong problem solver who likes to get to the root causes of problems. Able to work on multiple initiatives/tasks in a plant environment.   
  • Have a desire to drive cultural change.
  • Driven to become to the Subject Matter Expert of the Production Unit (from Process Engineering perspective).
