About the role – Health & Safety Advisor – SHES (Winnemucca, NV)
We are excited to announce an opportunity at Orica for a Health & Safety Advisor - SHES (Safety, Health, Environmental and Security) within our Specialty Mining Chemicals team.
This role is essential for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, along with Orica’s health and safety procedures.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to identifying, assessing, and mitigating workplace hazards to maintain a safe and healthy environment. This role involves enforcing safety regulations and investigating incidents to prevent future occurrences. Additionally, it provides support to foster excellence in Safety, Health, Environment, and Security (SHES) culture and performance through effective management of major hazards and critical controls, as well as the implementation of systems, standards, and governance.
What you will be doing
Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment:
- Regularly inspect workplaces to identify potential hazards, such as chemical exposure, ergonomic issues, or unsafe equipment through ongoing site inspections and audits
- Lead the development and rollout of the Orica Major Hazard Management (MHM) Program
- Manage industrial hygiene sampling activities (including management of site PPE), and conduct audits on ventilation, noise protection, heat, and cold stresses to create optimal safety environments for employees
- Organize programs for medical monitoring and employee safety
- Coordinate all aspects of site Safety Data Sheet management
Policy Development and Implementation:
- Develop and implement health and safety procedures and programs that comply with Orica policies and industry standards
- Develop and implement a robust Site Safety Induction
- Ensure that all employees are aware of and adhere to safety protocols
Training and Education:
- Provide training and education to employees on health and safety procedures, hazard recognition, and emergency evacuation and response
- Conduct safety briefings and meetings to reinforce safety messages
Incident Investigation and Analysis:
- Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions
- Maintain accurate records of incidents and safety performance. This includes monitoring and gatekeeping of events in the Orica Enablon database
Compliance and Enforcement:
- Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices.
- Monitor and enforce safety policies and procedures
Communication and Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with management, employees, and other stakeholders on health and safety matters
- Collaborate with other departments to identify and address safety concerns
Data Collection and Analysis:
- Collect and analyze data on workplace safety performance to identify trends and areas for improvement
- Prepare reports and presentations on safety performance
What you will bring
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and proficiency in safety management software
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Incident reporting (incl report writing) and investigation (Basic, 5Y, ICAM etc.)
- Ability to build relationships, engage and influence a diverse group of stakeholders
- Knowledge of applicable regulations – could include OSHA, DOT, NFPA, ANSI, EPA, ICMI
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power Bi)
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
- Attention to detail: Ensures accuracy in administrative tasks and vigilance in SHES duties
- Dependability: Reliable and trustworthy, with a strong sense of responsibility
- Problem-Solving: Able to handle unexpected situations calmly and effectively
- Team Player: Works well with others and supports team goals
- Integrity: Maintains confidentiality and adheres to ethical standards
Your qualifications
- Prefer Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health & Environment; Engineering; or related discipline
- Possess or have the capability to obtain external safety certificates or certifications
- Prefer at least three (3) years of Safety, Health, Environmental and Security experience
- Relevant experience in the manufacturing industry is a plus

- Monday to Friday
- Onsite Full-time, with occasional night shift / weekend work
- Less than 25% Travel
