About the role
The Technical Services Engineer / Blasting Technician is responsible for delivering high-quality technical support to underground operations across the WAM region, ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative blasting practices that meet operational objectives and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities include blast design and optimisation, remote firing setup and troubleshooting, misfire investigation, and execution of production and development blasting projects. The role also supports product stewardship, performance analysis, and the implementation of new products and technologies, with a strong focus on electronic blasting systems (EBS), particularly i-kon.
Through technical excellence, on-site support, and collaborative problem-solving, this position contributes to delivering measurable value to customers, strengthening technical relationships, and driving continuous improvement in blasting outcomes.
What you will be doing
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to and actively promote site safety standards and procedures.
- Lead by example in supporting SHEC (Safety, Health, Environment & Community) initiatives.
- Prepare and contribute to incident and misfire investigation reports.
- Maintain product stewardship and ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.
Technical Execution
- Design and execute underground blasting projects, including production and development blasting.
- Set up and troubleshoot remote firing systems and electronic initiation systems (e.g., i-kon).
- Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for electronic blasting systems.
- Analyse blast performance data and assess results against baseline measurements.
- Investigate misfires and provide recommendations for prevention and improvement.
- Support the implementation and trial of new blasting products and technologies.
Customer & Team Engagement
- Develop and maintain strong technical relationships with customers, acting as a trusted advisor.
- Deliver contracted Technical Services commitments and identify opportunities for business development.
- Prepare and present differentiated product and service offerings tailored to customer needs.
- Train and accredit customers in Orica’s TBTs, courses, products, and systems.
- Provide mentoring and technical guidance to Blast Technicians, site personnel, and Graduate Engineers.
- Develop case studies to document and share learnings from field applications.
What you will bring
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline, or trade-level qualification with equivalent experience in blasting or mining.
- Solid understanding of underground mining processes and blasting principles, including drill and blast design, initiation systems, and explosives application.
- Experience with electronic blasting systems (e.g., i-kon) and remote firing setups.
- Competency in pre- and post-blast measurement and performance analysis.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with site teams and customers.
Preferred
- –5 years’ experience in underground drill and blast operations or technical services roles.
- Hands-on experience in charging, shotfiring, and misfire investigation.
- Ability to manage technical projects and implement new blasting technologies.
- Familiarity with Orica’s technical software and digital tools.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or willingness to obtain); shotfiring licence highly regarded.
