About the role

 

The Senior Technician – Technology supports geophysical products used across mine sites in Australia and globally. This is a field-focused role where you will operate and deploy geophysical equipment to collect high-quality subsurface data that supports mining, drilling, and production decisions.

 

You will play a key role in ensuring reliable equipment performance, delivering technical support and training to customers, and maintaining strong relationships on-site to achieve high-quality outcomes.

 

This role sits within Hopper Industrial Group (HIG), a subsidiary aligned with Orica’s operations and offers the opportunity to work closely within Orica’s global technology and mining environment. A key highlight of the role is the opportunity for extensive travel, including a mix of domestic and international assignments.

What you will be doing

 

Equipment Preparation and Calibration

 

  • Prepare geophysical products and related equipment for field deployment.
  • Perform regular calibration to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Conduct pre-deployment checks to confirm optimal equipment condition. 

 

Operational Deployment 

 

  • Execute operational checks prior to and during deployment.
  • Operate geophysical tools during field assignments, ensuring accurate data collection.
  • Monitor equipment performance and make necessary adjustments during operations. 

 

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics 

 

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics to resolve equipment issues.
  • Implement corrective actions to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Liaise with client technical teams for complex troubleshooting and repairs. 

 

Client Training and Support 

 

  • Deliver hands-on training to client field staff on tool operation and maintenance.
  • Develop and present tailored training materials and sessions.
  • Provide ongoing technical support during field operations. 

 

Data Quality Assurance (QA/QC) 

 

  • Conduct QA/QC checks on collected data to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • Identify and correct data discrepancies.
  • Collaborate with data analysts to meet required standards. 

 

Customer Engagement 

 

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients during field operations.
  • Communicate operational status and data outcomes clearly and professionally.
  • Address client inquiries promptly and effectively. 

 

Leadership and Development 

 

  • Communicate effectively with client management.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate wireline engineers and technicians.
  • Assign and schedule technical tasks with clients and team members.
  • Oversee wireline activities, including inspections, repairs, and servicing.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Respond promptly to emergency troubleshooting requests. 

 

Safety, Health, Environment & Security (SHE&S) 

 

  • Enforce safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Promote compliance with Orica’s SHE&S and procurement policies.
  • Ensure adherence to preferred supplier governance. 

 

Process Improvement 

 

  • Evaluate and enhance maintenance processes and procedures.
  • Implement best practices for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and technological advancements. 

 

Communication & Collaboration 

 

  • Maintain clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide regular updates on equipment performance and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to improve reliability. 
  • Foster teamwork across Orica Digital Solutions functions. 

What you will bring

 

  • A background in Electronics, Electrical, or Mechatronics (degree, diploma, or trade)
  • Strong hands-on experience in tool maintenance, calibration, and diagnostics (ideally within downhole, wireline, or geophysical equipment)
  • Experience working in wireline, logging, subsurface services, or similar high-tempo, field-based environments
  • Exposure to leading global oil & gas, mining services providers, or similar field-based organisations will be highly regarded
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in field settings
  • Experience in collecting and interpreting technical or geological data (preferred)
  • Confident communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with customers and teams on-site
  • Ability to adapt to dynamic and remote field environments
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
  • Australian Citizenship and a valid passport, with the ability to travel at short notice

  • Additional hours worked during field assignments are balanced through time off in lieu (TOIL), supporting flexibility in how work and personal time are managed
