Established in 1874, we have grown to become the world leader in mining and civil blasting with a diverse of team of more than 13,000 across the world.

It’s an exciting time to join us – we are shaping the future of mining through digital and automated technologies, embracing new ways of thinking, pioneering innovation and reimagining the way we work.

About the role

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer / Technical Lead into Orica's Digital Solutions team, working on our Orebody Intelligence products. Orica's Digital Solutions connects our customers' physical and digital worlds so they can understand and optimise their operations at every step of the value chain, from exploration to processing.

You'll work on AXIS Connect Field, the application our customers use at the drill rig to capture borehole survey data from our Axis tools and deliver it to the cloud. It's the point where measurement becomes decision ready data, and the accuracy of what comes out of it flows directly into our customers' blasting, grade control and resource models.

It is a mature, established product operating in a demanding environment: connected instrumentation over Bluetooth and serial links, orientation and trajectory mathematics, and offline first data capture on a tablet at a remote site with no connectivity.

We're looking for someone with strong hands-on experience integrating Bluetooth and serial connected devices in industrial, hardware interfacing or IoT environments. The successful candidate will combine this expertise with the judgement to evolve a mature product: making pragmatic architectural decisions, leading day to day engineering and turning priorities into reliable delivery. Flutter and mobile development experience is a significant advantage, but depth in device integration is what matters most.

The team is a mixture of remote and hybrid (Perth based). You will work with other teams geographically distributed across Australia and overseas.

What you will be doing

  • Working closely with Product, SMEs and engineering leadership to deliver customer focused solutions.
  • Assisting in the technical direction of the product suite.
  • Engineering reliable communication workflows with connected positioning devices and the cloud.
  • Working with cutting edge field devices that solve real world problems.
  • Breaking large problems into work the team can ship.
  • Influencing the architecture and quality bar for the product.
  • Teaching and mentoring developers within the team.

What you will bring

  • Strong practical experience designing and building resilient communication flows over Bluetooth (Classic/BLE), serial and TCP/IP.
  • A solid understanding of asynchronous device communication, including lifecycle management, handshaking, sequencing, state management and failure handling.
  • Experience performing senior engineering or technical leadership responsibilities within a development team.
  • A track record of successfully delivering high quality software solutions.
  • Strong architectural judgement and demonstrated experience contributing to and driving technical design decisions.
  • Confidence in communicating technical concepts and trade-offs to Product and engineering leadership.
  • Experience working with industrial, field deployed or ruggedised devices is highly regarded.
  • Experience with Flutter/Dart and mobile application development is desirable.
  • A real passion for the integration of software and custom hardware devices.

The Tech Stack

  • Flutter mobile application for Android
  • Communication over Bluetooth (Classic/BLE), serial, TCP/IP
  • Custom positioning devices for in field usage
  • SQL database
  • Mature development environment with CI/CD, monitoring and analytics
