About Orica

At Orica, it’s the power of our people that leads change and shapes our futures. Every day, all around the world, our people help mobilise vital resources essential to progress. Established in 1874, we have grown to become the world leader in mining and civil blasting with a diverse of team of more than 14,000 across the world.

It’s an exciting time to join us – we are shaping the future of mining through digital and automated technologies, embracing new ways of thinking, pioneering innovation and reimagining the way we work.

About the role

As a Mechanical Engineer - Product Development, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and delivering innovative geospatial and mining technologies within Orica's Orebody Intelligence (OBI) team. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering group, you will be responsible for the full product lifecycle, from concept development and detailed design through prototyping, verification, manufacturing handover, commercial deployment, and ongoing product support.

In this role, you will lead mechanical design activities to create reliable, manufacturable, and commercially viable solutions that perform in challenging mining environments. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to drive product innovation, support continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure engineering excellence throughout the development and sustainment of advanced technology products.

What you will be doing

Mechanical Design and Product Development

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, assemblies and components for geospatial and mining products.
  • Lead mechanical design activities from concept generation through detailed design, verification, release, sustaining engineering and obsolescence.
  • Develop and revision-manage 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings and associated technical documentation.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, material selection and design reviews to support robust product performance.
  • Conduct or support Finite Element Analysis (FEA), simulation and other engineering evaluations to validate design decisions.

Prototyping, Verification and Technical Risk

  • Develop prototypes and oversee prototype manufacture, assembly and testing.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical risk assessments, verification, validation and environmental testing.
  • Investigate product failures, conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Support field evaluations and customer trials when required.

Product Integration and Collaboration

  • Work closely with electronics, software and systems engineers to integrate complete electromechanical solutions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, suppliers and external manufacturers to optimise quality, cost, reliability and manufacturability.
  • Communicate technical progress, risks, decisions and support requirements clearly across project stakeholders.

NPI, Manufacturing Handover and Sustaining Engineering

  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials, engineering reports, design records and product documentation.
  • Support New Product Introduction activities and manufacturing handovers.
  • Drive engineering changes and sustaining activities to improve product performance, reliability, manufacturability and product life.
  • Mentor graduate and junior engineers where appropriate.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in product development, ideally involving electromechanical or industrial products.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software, with the ability to create and maintain detailed design documentation.
  • Experience producing engineering drawings and managing design revisions throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T, fit selection, tolerance analysis, and structural, static, and dynamic design principles.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, documenting, and releasing manufactured products for production.
  • Working knowledge of engineering calculations, material selection, and mechanical tolerance analysis.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and root-cause investigation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple technical priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to prepare clear, accurate, and professional engineering documentation.
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Experience designing and developing mechanical products for mining, industrial, or other harsh operating environments.
  • Strong CAD design skills, including proficiency with Onshape and advanced modelling techniques.
  • Knowledge of engineering simulation tools such as FEA and CFD.
  • Experience applying Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles and working with modern manufacturing processes, including machining, fabrication, additive manufacturing, and rapid prototyping.
  • Experience designing complex mechanical systems, including sealing solutions, threaded assemblies, rotating equipment, and power transmission components.
  • Exposure to product reliability, verification and validation, failure analysis, environmental testing, and new product introduction (NPI).
  • Familiarity with electronic systems, sensors, instrumentation, communication systems, and IoT-enabled technologies.
