About the role
The Engineer - Blasting, based on Freeport site, provides safe, practical, and value-adding technical support for underground blasting activities. Working closely with Orica operations and customer teams, you will support blast planning, implementation, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement to deliver safer and more effective blasting outcomes.
What you will be doing
- Provide field support during blast preparation and execution, including design interpretation, system verification, technical troubleshooting, and post-blast observations.
- Prepare and validate drill-and-blast designs for underground development, production, secondary blasting, and special projects.
- Ensure blasting activities comply with Orica, customer, statutory, and SHES requirements.
- Collect and analyse blast-performance data, including advance, fragmentation, overbreak, underbreak, vibration, and other relevant measures.
- Investigate blasting outcomes and provide practical recommendations to improve safety, recovery, dilution control, cycle time, and operational value.
- Support approved electronic, wireless, and digital blasting systems, subject to the required training and authorisation.
- Maintain accurate blast records and contribute to incident investigations, technical trials, reports, presentations, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
What you will bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering.
- Practical knowledge of underground mining, blasting processes, explosive products, initiation systems, and charging practices.
- Ability to interpret mine plans, drilling layouts, blast designs, and technical data.
- Strong engineering calculation, reporting, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Strong safety awareness and the ability to meet underground medical, fitness-for-work, and site-access requirements.
- Relevant blasting or site-required qualifications and working proficiency in English and the customer site’s operational language are preferred.
- Underground blasting experience, exposure to blast-design software, electronic initiation systems, QA/QC, vibration monitoring, or fragmentation analysis will be highly regarded.

- Safe, compliant, and fit-for-purpose blast designs are delivered and effectively implemented.
- Field information and blast-performance data are accurate, traceable, and used to improve future designs.
- Blasting outcomes demonstrate continuous improvement in areas such as advance, fragmentation, excavation profile, recovery, dilution control, ground protection, and cycle time.
- Technical recommendations are practical, evidence-based, and trusted by Orica and customer stakeholders.
- Safety concerns, unexpected outcomes, and technical risks are identified, communicated, and appropriately escalated.
