About the role

 

We are excited to invite applications for a Lead – Tax, Southern Africa, a critical leadership role responsible for shaping and executing Orica’s regional tax strategy.

 

In this position, you will oversee all tax matters across the region, ensuring robust compliance with local tax legislation and Orica’s global tax standards, while proactively managing tax risks and disputes. As a trusted advisor to the business, you will provide strategic, commercially focused tax guidance that supports sustainable growth and informed decision‑making.

 

 

This role is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and offers the opportunity to make a significant impact within a complex, multinational environment.

What you will be doing

  • Lead tax strategy execution across Southern Africa
    Implement Orica’s regional and global tax strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and consistent application of tax standards and policies.
  • Ensure full tax compliance and reporting
    Oversee the preparation, review, and timely filing of all direct, indirect, and withholding tax returns, coordinating internal teams and external service providers. 
  • Manage tax audits, disputes, and regulatory engagement
    Act as the primary point of contact with revenue authorities, proactively managing audits, resolving disputes, and driving closure of historical tax matters. 
  • Support business initiatives and projects
    Provide tax input into M&A activity, group structuring, transfer pricing documentation, and new market or entity set‑ups within the region.
  • Drive continuous improvement in tax processes
    Strengthen tax governance, improve documentation and controls, and monitor legislative changes to assess and communicate business impacts.

What you will bring

  • End‑to‑end regional tax leadership
    You bring deep expertise in managing tax affairs across multiple African jurisdictions, ensuring full compliance with local legislation, IFRS requirements, and Orica’s global tax standards.
  • Strategic tax advisory mindset
    You contribute commercially focused tax advice that supports business decisions, effective tax rate management, and sustainable growth across the region.
  • Strong governance and risk management capability
    You bring a proven ability to identify, manage, and mitigate tax risks, including leading audits, resolving legacy disputes, and strengthening tax processes and documentation. 
  • Leadership and stakeholder influence
    You bring experience managing and developing a regional tax team while building trusted relationships with finance, legal, Group Tax, external advisors, and revenue 
  • Technical depth with a global perspective
    You bring advanced knowledge of corporate tax, transfer pricing, tax treaties, and international tax matters, ideally supported by Big 4 or large multinational experience.
