Orica is seeking a skilled Solution Designer and Cloud Infrastructure Engineer for the Enterprise Data Platform to lead the design and infrastructure management of data products ion our multi-cloud platform. This role bridges the gap between business needs and technical execution, ensuring scalable, secure, and efficient data solutions. Collaborating with business stakeholders and technical teams, you will design, implement, and oversee innovative data architectures and cloud infrastructure that align with Orica’s IT strategy and enterprise goals.   

The role is based in our Melbourne office. 

About the role

We are extremely excited to announce that we are inviting candidate applications for a Solutions Architect for Data Platform role to be based in our Melbourne office, on a hybrid working setup.

The Solutions Architect for Data Platform is tasked with the comprehensive oversight of data products developed on Orica’s multi-cloud platform. The set of responsibilities span from setting strategic directions to the development and continuous management of data products. A critical aspect of their role is to bridge the gap between business needs and technical execution, translating complex requirements into actionable designs for developers to execute. This ensures that Orica’s data infrastructure remains secure, scalable, and capable of delivering premium data to meet the essential needs of the company’s diverse business, IT, and technology sectors.

Aside from their architectural duties, the Solutions Architect for Data Platform demands proficiency in API management, encompassing both the technical and functional aspects as data traverses from its origins to its consumption by end-users. The Solutions Architect is also responsible for aligning detailed designs with Orica’s enterprise goals and customer-facing solution standards, thereby upholding the high quality of the products. Their contribution is pivotal in supporting Orica’s business and IT strategies, involving active collaboration with IT personnel, vendors, and business stakeholders to design, implement, and oversee data and automation platforms and technologies, all while leveraging their extensive IT expertise and strong skills in leadership and stakeholder engagement.

What you will be doing

Solution Design & Development: 

• Interpret business requirements and translate them into technical solution designs including cloud services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), networking, integrations etc. 
• Design and maintain robust architectures for AI applications, data storage, processing, analysis, and governance. 
• Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure and manage integrations to ensure seamless data flow which is secure and aligned to internal standards. 
• Craft solution designs using Azure, Google, SAP and Databricks technologies for discussion with architecture colleagues and business leaders.  
• Lead design and development of DevOps automations, CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, YAML), and modern cloud infrastructure best practices. 

Leadership & Collaboration: 

•  Drive performance culture, inclusivity, and innovation within the data, analytics and AI team. 
• Engage with business stakeholders to support proofs of value/proof of concepts and ensure solutions meet their needs as well as aligning to internal IT standards. 
• Work closely with cross functional technical teams to enhance user experiences and align with strategic objectives. 

 Governance & Lifecycle Management: 

•  Ensure designs comply with Orica’s IT standards and quality requirements. 
• Oversee solution releases, upgrades, and vendor coordination. 
• Maintain detailed documentation throughout development and implementation. 

What you will bring

• Tertiary qualification in IT or related discipline. 
• 10+ years in IT with expertise in at least 2 of the following domains: 
  • Cloud infrastructure, SAP Analytics, Data Management, ETL, Data Analytics, Data Visualization. 
  • Data Warehouse, Data Lake, Cloud Data Services, API Management. 
• Hands-on experience with: 
  • Azure services, including OpenAI, IoT Hub, VMs, storage, and networking. 
  • DevOps automations, CI/CD using GitHub Actions, YAML coding. 
  • Solution design in Azure, SAP, Google Cloud, and Databricks. 
• Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies. 
• Proven ability to work with global teams, contractors, and vendors. 
• Strong communication skills to engage with both technical and non-technical audiences. 
• Exceptional planning, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
