About the role:
As Orica continues to expand and invest across its global manufacturing network, we are seeking an experienced and commercially astute General Manager, Manufacturing Projects to lead our end to end capital project portfolio. Reporting to the Vice President – Continuous Manufacturing, this newly created role provides global accountability for the governance, prioritisation and execution of Orica’s manufacturing projects across continuous manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, and specialty mining chemicals.
With responsibility for a capital portfolio of approximately $200m per annum, this role plays a critical part in delivering Orica’s growth agenda — including major brownfield and greenfield expansions, M&A integrations, plant upgrades, and nationally significant projects such as the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub.
This is a senior leadership role operating at the intersection of strategy, project execution and operational risk — requiring strong enterprise judgement, commercial discipline and the credibility to engage from plant floor to executive committee.
Key responsibilities:
- Global Project Governance & Delivery:
Provide executive leadership across Orica’s global manufacturing project portfolio, ensuring safe, timely and cost effective project delivery across the globe. - Capital Portfolio Ownership:
Lead and optimise a ~$200m annual capital program spanning growth, sustenance, expansion and integration projects. - Project Execution Excellence:
Set standards and frameworks for project execution across EPC and EPCM delivery models, ensuring disciplined cost control, risk management and schedule certainty. - Strategic Investment Leadership:
Partner with senior leaders to shape long term capital investment strategies aligned to Orica’s operational, commercial and sustainability objectives. - M&A & Integration Support:
Play a key role in asset assessments, acquisition integration, and establishment of project governance for newly acquired manufacturing assets. - People & Capability Leadership:
Lead a global projects organisation with responsibility for multiple project offices and specialist teams across Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. - Stakeholder Influence & Governance:
Engage with senior executives, investment committees, boards, regulators and delivery partners to ensure strong governance and transparent decision making. - Safety & Risk Leadership:
Embed a strong safety culture across all projects, ensuring disciplined management of high risk industrial and Major Hazard Facility environments.
What you will bring:
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or similar) and Project Management credentials will be highly regarded.
- Extensive leadership experience delivering large scale capital projects in high risk, Chemical manufacturing environments (chemicals, energy, fertilisers, industrial processing or similar).
- Demonstrated success managing complex brownfield and greenfield projects, including major expansions and plant upgrades.
- Strong commercial capability across contracting strategies, EPC/EPCM models, and supplier negotiations.
- Proven experience operating within structured corporate governance and investment approval frameworks.
- Ability to engage credibly with stakeholders at all levels — from site teams to executive leadership and investment committees.
- A track record of building and leading high performing, geographically dispersed project teams.
- A delivery mindset with a strong focus on safety, accountability and results.
Location:
This role is ideally based in Eastern Australia, aligned to Orica’s major manufacturing hubs such as Brisbane, Newcastle or Gladstone. Regular domestic and international travel will be required.
