About The Role – Geotechnical Instrumentation Field Technician (Fort St. John, BC – fly in/flyout)
We are excited to announce an opportunity for a Geotechnical Instrumentation Field Technician with the Orica Digital Solutions team.
You'll play a crucial role in monitoring a new dam structure by maintaining, troubleshooting, and collecting data from geotechnical instruments. Gain valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic field environment!
This is a FLY IN / FLY OUT position (rotation schedule 2 weeks on/1 week off due to scheduling). Travel and accommodations are provided. Competitive pay, including daily overtime, and travel time paid up to 8 hours.
SPECIAL NOTE: All employees working at Site-C must adhere to the drug and alcohol policy and successfully pass drug & alcohol testing prior to employment.
What you will be doing
- Collect manual and automated instrumentation readings, conduct data checks, reductions, and analysis.
- Assist with the installation, testing, calibration, commissioning, repair and maintenance of geotechnical instruments and the permanent automated data acquisition system (ADAS) including the MIMS.
- Maintain, calibrate and use all equipment related to the above tasks.
- Types of instruments include:
- Piezometers (vibrating wire, pneumatic and standpipe)
- Extensometers
- Inclinometers
- ShapeAccelArrays (SAAs)
- Settlement cells/plates
- Flumes, flow meters
- Survey markers/monuments
- Temperature sensing cables
- Support documentation, including installation reports, as-built drawings and commissioning records. Submit data and documentation in a format that complies with the customer GIS Standard.
- Follow and contribute to installation procedures and execution plans.
- Assist the commissioning/repair/decommissioning and other related activities of geotechnical instrumentation.
- Collaborate with Project Manager/Engineer & Supervisor.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions (-40°C to +40°C).
- Other duties as assigned by the manager
What you will bring
- At least 6 months to 1 year of experience in the collection of manual and automated data from various types of geotechnical instrumentation, including Standpipe Piezometers, Vibrating Wire Piezometers, Pneumatic Piezometers, Inclinometers, and Extensometers.
- Familiarity with geotechnical site investigations (preferred).
- Strong safety commitment.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Organized, detail-oriented, strong work ethic, problem-solver.
- Ability to contribute positively to team dynamics and work well with others
- Demonstrates strong time management skills and consistently meets deadlines
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean record.
- Willing to work in a remote location on a rotational basis.
- Able to work outdoors for extended periods in extreme weather.
Preferred:
- Engineering degree and able to pursue EIT designation in related field.
- Experience in heavy civil and/or mining construction.
- Familiarity with ShapeAccelArrays (SAAs), settlement cells/plates, flumes, flow meters, survey markers/monuments and temperature sensing cables.

- Work Schedule: Rotation schedule TBD: 2 weeks on/1 week off or 2 weeks on/2 weeks off
Your qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Geotechnical, Geological, Electronic, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant technical field.
- Registered EIT or eligible for registration with EGBC (preferred)

Compensation:
- Full-time hourly
- $28.85/hr - $33.65/hr
- OT paid at 1.5x
- Additional $10/hr field work premium while on site
- Travel and accommodations are provided
- Competitive pay, including daily overtime, and travel time paid up to 8 hours
