About the role

This role is part of the new Orica Technology Centre in Hyderabad, India, which aims to provide engineering and technical services to Orica's global operations. The Design Engineer will work Monday to Friday in a supportive and inclusive team of industry professionals. Responsibilities include modeling and drawing engineering components and assemblies, maintaining and improving existing product designs, assisting in the design of new products, and producing and updating detailed mechanical and electrical drawings for both new and existing products. Additionally, the Design Engineer will initially lead a small team of draftspeople, with potential for team growth over time.

What you will be doing

- Lead activities for new product and technology development, ensuring compliance with Orica safety, legal, and risk management standards.
- Ensure team delivers high-quality work and protects intellectual property.
- Maintain high customer experience standards and adhere to change management processes.
- Act as a liaison to support technology and business objectives.
- Manage a team to achieve program objectives and projects within budget.
- Incorporate safety into designs and methods for new and current products.
- Assemble prototype systems and integrate with software systems.
- Plan and organize product testing, liaising with suppliers and facilities.
- Develop solutions meeting stakeholder requirements for reliability, manufacturability, cost, and time to market.
- Deliver clear manufacturing documentation, including BOMs, assembly instructions, drawing packs, QC, and test instructions.
- Provide documentation to support training material development for product maintenance and usage.
- Complete tasks and projects on time, ensuring products meet environmental, usability, and reliability standards.
- Apply problem-solving techniques to assist support teams with product issues (Level 4 Support).
- Keep design files and information updated and stored per product development procedures.
- Develop strong intellectual property for Orica.
- Create 3D models/assemblies and 2D drawings in SolidWorks using standard drafting practices.
- Update and modify 2D drawings promptly for design changes.

What you will bring

- Advanced proficiency in English (oral and written), as it is Orica's global business language.
- University degree or equivalent in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Mechatronic).
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in a commercial environment.
- Experience in designing mechanical components and assemblies, including supplier documentation, BoM, 3D modeling, and design calculations.
- New product design experience, including design, prototyping, testing of complex engineering equipment/systems, and documentation.
- Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Strong technical writing skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Highly motivated, able to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work well in a team, motivating others.
- Practical knowledge of plant and equipment fabrication and materials is preferred.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (or equivalent) / Registered Professional Engineer (or equivalent).
- Experience in hydraulic and electrical design drafting (e.g., cable drawings).
- Knowledge of process engineering.
